My Approach

You may have found your way to this page because you have been struggling with difficult feelings or behaviours and you are looking for help. It might be that you’ve been feeling low for some time, or you feel overwhelmed with anxiety or stress. Perhaps something intangible just doesn’t feel right and you find you’re not able to think clearly. You might be stuck with difficult thoughts that are hard to shift which lead you to actions that are hindering the way you want to live your life. Or you might have experienced something traumatic recently or a long time ago and you need help processing what happened.

I practice psychodynamic psychotherapy, which is a form of psychoanalytic therapy. The aim is to find the heart of your discomforts, which can emerge slowly and sometimes unexpectedly over time. In regular, weekly sessions we think carefully together about your life, your thoughts and emotions, identifying patterns and feelings that you may not have been aware of. It can lead to an understanding of how events and relationships in your past might be affecting you in the here and now. It isn’t always easy; sometimes we face things that are hard to look at.

I provide a reliable, confidential space in which we can safely explore what’s on your mind. I invite you to talk freely about anything that comes to your mind and we see where that takes us. This talking therapy isn’t rushed; it can be open-ended if you like. I won’t offer advice or coping mechanisms, which may feel uncomfortable at first; instead we try to work through the layers of your feelings and process them. I listen to you, holding an awareness of the mind and relationships in my thoughts, in order to try to find our way towards understanding without judgement. This in turn can lead to a deeper, long-term change; a chance to understand yourself, which can help foster a feeling of inner strength, acceptance and a sense of peace over time.

There is a strong and growing evidence base which extols the long-term improvements in mental health that psychodynamic therapy can achieve, often continuing beyond the end of the course of therapy.

About me

I trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the highly regarded and internationally renowned Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust on a British Pyschoanalytic Council accredited five year course, which included four years of clinical work within the NHS. In my training I specialised in intercultural psychotherapy.

I have experience working in the NHS, in military settings and in the charity sector. I specialise in one-to-one, long-term psychotherapy with adults. I am a member of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists and the British Psychoanalytic Council and I adhere to their code of standards and ethics. I am also a registered member of the British Association for Psychotherapists and Counsellors, MBACP.
